The London museum had warned that it was a month from closure last week, but has succeeded in a crowdfunding appeal
The Vagina Museum has surpassed its £60k crowdfunding goal in a single weekend, ending fears it may be forced to permanently close.
Last week, the London museum had warned that financial pressures, namely a quarterly rent bill, would put the museum below its reserves. It launched a public fundraising appeal to raise the necessary fund.
The crowdfunding page was launched on Friday, 14 March. By the next day, the museum had secured the required funding.
At the time of writing the museum has raised £67,878 from nearly 2,000 donors.
The museum said “We are currently operating with the smallest possible budget and the smallest possible team who work hard to bring you world-class exhibitions, events and engagement.”
We have hit our target! The Vagina Museum is saved! This #WomensHistoryMonth, together we prevented the Vagina Museum from becoming a footnote in women's history. Instead, we made women's history. This community prevailed against overwhelming forces! https://t.co/jc0IjjtInF

Last week, Zoe Williams, Director of the museum, said: “This is a critical moment. If we do not meet our fundraising target, we will determine how best to use the funds raised—whether to sustain operations for a few more months while seeking longer-term funding or to explore alternative ways to continue our work.”
On its fundraising page, the museum said if it exceeded its target it could “enter a growth phase”.
