The London museum has launched a crowdfunding project to offset financial difficulties which it says threaten its existence

London’s Vagina Museum has warned it could be forced to permanently close if the target of its latest fundraising effort is not met.

The museum has launched a crowdfunding page on GoFundMe, with a target of £60,000.

The new fundraising efforts are launched as the museum says it is in a financially ‘make-or-break’ moment.

It explained that a “large” quarterly rent payment due this month would drive it below its minimum reserves limit.

The museum moved into the Bethnal green property in 2023, labelling the building – inside Bethnal Green railway arches – as its new long-term location.

If its £60,00 goal is not met, the museum said its future could be in doubt before the end of the year. However, if it surpasses its target, it said it could instead “enter a growth phase”.

The fundraising page states: “We are currently operating with the smallest possible budget and the smallest possible team who work hard to bring you world-class exhibitions, events and engagement.”

Zoe Williams, Director of the Vagina Museum added: “Since its founding, the Vagina Museum has been a bold, unapologetic space for education, activism and community.

“We welcome thousands of visitors every month and reach even more through digital outreach, breaking stigmas and fostering conversations that are often overlooked or silenced.

“This is a critical moment. If we do not meet our fundraising target, we will determine how best to use the funds raised—whether to sustain operations for a few more months while seeking longer-term funding or to explore alternative ways to continue our work.”
