Staff from Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives and Tate Modern are set to showcase their own artworks in a free week-long exhibition held in the latter gallery’s Blavatnik Building.
The exhibition, which follows in the footsteps of last year’s Inside Job, begins today and will feature works from 133 Tate employees. The show has also been curated by a staff collective.
On display between 28th August and 3rd September in Tate Modern’s Blavatnik Building, the Tate Staff Biennale 2019 shares the work of retail assistants, art handlers, caterers and visitor assistants alike, in order to highlight the huge artistic talent among the teams which make the world famous galleries tick.
Connections are also made in the exhibition between the staff’s works and the ways in which their respective practices have been “informed and shaped” by working with Tate’s extensive collections and exhibitions.
The inaugural Tate Staff Biennale has been curated by the Inside Job Collective, a group of Tate staff committed to promoting the works of colleagues who are also practicing artists. 2018’s Inside Job exhibition marked the first occasion Tate employees had ever been permitted to display their own work in one of the organisation’s spaces.
The works of this year’s staff-run event explore a theme of ‘movement’ and include media such as painting, sculpture, photography, film and sound.
