Royal Albert Dock installs permanent projectors for animation series on closed Maritime

Liverpool dock launches Dock Shorts with 14 seasonal projections per year on museum facade during redevelopment works.

Royal Albert Dock Liverpool has installed three permanent state-of-the-art projectors to display short animations on the back facade of the Maritime Museum whilst it undergoes transformation as part of the Waterfront Transformation Project.

The animation series, named Dock Shorts, will feature 14 bespoke shows per year for the next two years, with each 20-second projection aligned with key calendar moments including Christmas, Lunar New Year, Valentine’s Day, Halloween and other major cultural events. The programme launched with a Halloween projection on 31st October, with a Remembrance Day themed display scheduled for 9th and 11th November from 5pm to 9pm.

The projections are displayed on the temporarily closed Maritime Museum, with the best viewing point from the dock’s inner quay. Each projection uses high-quality mapping techniques and is individually themed to provide an immersive experience.

The Halloween launch featured a ghostly tale of The Albert Hartley, a legendary ship-wreck and the vessel’s final voyage before it was lost to stormy seas. Actors portraying the ship’s ghostly crew members and captain wandered around the dock on Halloween night, interacting with families.

Jacob Loftus, CEO of General Projects, said: “This series marks an exciting new chapter for the dock, blending innovative projection technology with the rich heritage of the site. By showcasing a variety of seasonal and cultural themes, we aim to enhance the visitor experience, attract diverse audiences, and further cement the dock’s role as a vibrant cultural landmark in Liverpool.”

The programme presents opportunities for brand partnerships and sponsorship.
