Newhaven Fort schedules reveal of £7.5m restoration

The historic landmark in East Sussex will open later this month after a 12 month restoration project

Newhaven Fort, a historic landmark in East Sussex, is to reopen its doors to the public later this month, completing transformative £7.5m restoration project.

Opening on 15 February 2025 after 12 months of closure, the newly restored 19th-century fort will reveal an enhanced visitor experience, a new adventure playground, cafe, interactive exhibitions, and previously hidden parts of the fort.

The newly accessible Battery Observation Post will offer panoramic views of the Sussex coastline for the first time.

A 1970s-themed escape room is set to open shortly after in April 2025.

The attraction’s Romney Hut in the fort’s parade square has been re-clad and insulated, providing an event space for school activities, events, and corporate hire.

Each of the fort’s 18 casemates – the vaults within the site – have been revamped to serve as exhibition areas, with two casemates available for venue hire.

From March 2025, the fort will host a new programme of events, including workshops, guided tours, exhibitions and talks.

Lindsay Lawrence, general manager at Newhaven Fort called the restoration a “milestone project”.

“Our restoration not only preserves the fort for future generations but has also transformed it into a more accessible, sustainable and dynamic visitor attraction.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome visitors back to this incredible place,” Lawrence said.
