Dr Sandra Knapp OBE FRS takes up newly created role overseeing 150 researchers and collections-based research at the London institution.

The Natural History Museum in London has appointed Dr Sandra Knapp OBE FRS as its first Director of Research.

Dr Knapp, who had served as Interim Director of Research for over a year, will lead the museum’s collections-based research, providing strategic and operational guidance.

The newly created role oversees approximately 150 researchers, forming part of a wider group of around 400 scientists at the institution. This research community includes curators working with the museum’s collection of 80 million specimens and objects.

Dr Knapp, a plant taxonomist, has been at the Natural History Museum since 1992 and is recognised as a leading authority on the nightshade family.

She has authored over 200 peer-reviewed papers and more than 30 books, including Extraordinary Orchids and Flora: An Artistic Voyage Through the World of Plants.

The museum’s Director of Science, Dr Tim Littlewood, said of Dr Knapp: “Her extensive scientific experience and qualifications, including her election as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), combined with her engaging communication style made her an outstanding choice to lead our research efforts to help combat the planetary emergency.”

Dr Knapp said: “I am honoured to be entrusted with leading the talented team of world-class researchers we have at the Museum. Together we can show the world the critical importance of collections-based research for understanding and protecting our world and for creating solid, active advocates for the planet.”

The Director of Research role will support researchers, encourage development of funding proposals and maintain standards in research and skill-building. Dr Knapp will shape and promote the museum’s postgraduate education programmes and research organised across nine themes.

The appointment follows the museum’s first Director of Collections, Jessica Bradford, appointed in January 2024.
