Dr Sam Alberti has been announced as National Museums Scotland’s new director of collections, having previously worked for the organisation in a variety of roles.

Alberti has been immersed in the museums sector for two decades, most recently as National Museums Scotland’s keeper of science & technology since 2016 and interim keeper of art & design since 2019. He is also honorary professor in cultural heritage at the University of Stirling and a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh

Former roles prior to joining National Museums Scotland have been based at the University of Manchester and the Royal College of Surgeons of England, where he served as director of museums and archives.

Alberti’s research centres on the history of collections, with a particular focus on scientific, medical and natural objects in Britain since 1800. Cold War museology, contemporary collecting and the role of museums in the climate emergency have been recent areas of specific interest.

The appointee says it was a “pleasure and a privilege” to remain at National Museums Scotland in this new role. “From its extraordinary collections and lively public programme to sector-leading research and conservation, it’s a dynamic museum group with an exciting future. I’m delighted to be a part of it,” he continues.

Dr Chris Breward, director of National Museums Scotland, notes that Alberti taking on the director of collections role “comes at a particularly important time”, as the organisation plots its route to post-lockdown recovery.

“I look forward to working with him on our vibrant exhibitions and research programmes, as well as on developing access to our collections,” Breward concludes.
