Appointments

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) has announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive. The public body will be led by Katerina Brown, who joins HES from the National Trust for Scotland, where she currently serves as its Chief Operating Officer.

The Jewish Museum London has appointed Sally Angel as its new Chief Executive. Angel, who previously worked at the BBC as an Arts producer and helped to launch the BBC’s commercial and digital channels, is also the Creative Director of Angelica Films, and

Sue Hoyle OBE has been appointed as Chair of the Foundling Museum’s Board of Trustees, succeeding Larissa Joy later this month. Hoyle has previously served as Director of non-profit Clore Leadership, Deputy Secretary-General for Arts Council England and Executive Director of London’s The Place.

Openings & closures

Mount Oswald Manor, a Grade 2 listed house dating back to around 1800, has been renovated and expanded to create The Story which opened to the public on Friday, June 14, 2024. Mather & Co is responsible for the interpretative design of the new cultural, heritage and registration venue for County Durham, which has been created by Durham County Council.

Exhibitions

An exhibition exploring the life and work of Frankie Goes to Hollywood frontman Holly Johnson premieres at the Museum of Liverpool this September, part of National Museums Liverpool’s newly announced Autumn/Winter programme. ‘The Holly Johnson Story’ is the result of a partnership between National Museums Liverpool and local arts organisation’s Homotopia and DuoVision in collaboration with Johnson, and will chart the artist’s life from Liverpool to international stages. Opens 14 September 2024.

Also announced today by National Museums Liverpool, this October the Walker Art Gallery will host a major exhibition celebrating Black British women and non-binary artists. ‘Conversations’ brings together work by nearly 50 leading Black women and non-binary artists in paintings, sculpture and video from the last ten years. Runs 19 October 2024 to 9 March 2025.

A new exhibition at National Museum Cardiff explores the visual culture, communities, and landscape of the south Wales Valleys through artworks and objects from Amgueddfa Cymru’s national collection. ‘The Valleys’ includes a group of new photography acquisitions alongside film and applied art from over 60 artists across 200 artworks. The Valleys exhibition will overlap with Amgueddfa Cymru’s exhibition focusing on the 1984/1985 strikes, which opens in October. Runs until 3 November 2024.

In September, the British Museum opens ‘Silk Road’s, an exhibition of overlapping networks of historic trade routes. Structured into five geographical zones, the exhibition will display more than 300 objects including 29 national and international loans, many on display in the UK for the first time. Objects include the oldest group of chess pieces ever found and a six-metre-long wall painting from the ‘Hall of the Ambassadors’ in Uzbekistan. Runs 26 September 2024 – 23 February 2025.
