Museum launches Treasure Appeal to create designated fund for acquiring region’s archaeological finds.
Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery has launched a designated fund for acquiring significant historical items, archaeological finds, and works of art discovered locally.
The Treasure Appeal aims to create a fund that will enable the museum to bid for items which hold intrinsic value for the region. Capital will be raised through online public donations.
The Treasure Appeal will allow the institution not only to purchase finds for, but also care for them according to Museum Accreditation standards.
The appeal responds to acquisition opportunities arising from archaeological finds, historical material, and regional artworks, it said.
It said metal detecting finds, including precious metal objects and numismatic material, alongside rediscovered collections, frequently present acquisition opportunities. According to the museum: “Many of those who discover hidden treasure have a strong desire to see their precious finds cared for by a local museum where they can be enjoyed by all.” The fund will cover acquisition costs and subsequent conservation work.
The museum explain that its acquisition strategy will prioritises rapid integration into public programming, with new material going on display shortly after
