Sunderland City Council is seeking an experienced and suitably qualified Museum Collection Care and Development Specialist to join its project team as it moves towards submission of a development phase bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2024 for Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens. Reporting to the Service Manager – Heritage and Museums, the main purpose of this role is to oversee the management and operation of our designated and accredited Collection and Acquisitions, mobilising the delivery of collection care across all aspects of the museum collection and working with the museum team and commissioned partners to ensure the collection is managed, stored, conserved and preserved in line with appropriate museum conditions and policy requirements.

This is an exciting opportunity that will place the collection central to delivery. You will be responsible for seeking opportunities to maximise access to the collection by the public, funding/community partners and other museum professionals. You will lead responsibility for a collections move and reinstatement during the redevelopment phase. You will also be required to work closely with the wider museum team to develop the use of the collection by taking an active role in the design and delivery of exhibitions, community engagement and learning activity working alongside visitors, schools, volunteers, community leaders and cultural partners.

The successful applicant will also lead the delivery of a collection care development plan including overseeing the management and operation of the Collections Management System ensuring close engagement with Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums and dealing with any technical requirements and associated systems.

The successful applicant should be willing to put forward new ideas and innovative solutions to effectively showcase the collection, make appropriate storage and disposal recommendations in line with policy recommendations and in communication with core museum staff and regional partners. The use of digital technology and new innovative storage solutions (both on/off site will also be considered)

Problem solving is a key aspect of the role, and a flexible approach to working is essential. The post-holder will be expected to work from the museum and attend project team meetings in person and remotely. Some occasional weekend working may be required.

This post is exempt from the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to a DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
