Artists to reinterpret RAMM’s collection as part of Museum of Colour project

The Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery’s collection serves as inspiration for ten artists as part of The Colour Museum’s latest project.

A new project will see two museums collaborate, allowing artists including writers, spoken word artists and composers to explore and reinterpret the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery’s (RAMM) collection.

The project comes from the Museum of Colour, a digital museum produced by the charity People’s Palace Projects, a charitable subsidiary of Queen Mary University of London.

The Museum of Colour is a digital museum that explores the contribution made by People of Colour to the nation’s culture, specifically in film, television and the arts.

Launching next month, the My Words gallery will be a permanent digital exhibition of portraits of artists of colour, RAMM said the aim is “to make visible those who collectively have made a significant change to our understanding of poetry and spoken word in Britain”.

The ten artists involved have experienced RAMM’s collections, either through a physical or online visit, and chosen aspects to respond to in their work.

Their pieces will be showcased at a private launch event held at the museum, curated by Melanie Abrahams, where attendees will listen to the responses, accompanied by live music and vocals, composed by Randolph Matthews.

Performing will be Mona Arshi, Victoria Adukwei Bulley, Fred D’Aguiar, Jennifer Lee Tsai, Adam Lowe, Shivanee Ramlochan, Jacob Sam-La Rose, John Siddique, Yomi Sode and Yusra Warsama.

Following on from the project later this year, RAMM will host My Words poetry workshops, exploring the written word with some of the featured poets.
