The Arts Council will be hosting a series of briefing events across England next month to support museums and galleries to understand and benefit from the Museums and Galleries Tax Relief (MGTR)
The briefings are presented in partnership with HMRC and will provide detailed information about the Museums and Galleries Exhibitions Tax Relief, including eligibility and how to make a claim.
Plans to grant museums and galleries tax relief on permanent basis, as well as the originally proposed temporary and touring exhibitions, were confirmed last year and followed a campaign led by the Association of Independent Museums.
The tax relief means that museums and galleries can claim up to £80,000 for non-touring exhibitions and £100,000 if the exhibition is toured. MGTR is available for expenditure incurred from 1 April 2017.
“We anticipate a high demand for these events and so will be restricting attendance to one person per organisation,” said an ACE spokesperson. “To maximise the benefit of these events, we strongly recommend that the person responsible for financial management at your organisation should attend.”
The tax relief is designed to recognise the unique cultural value that museums and galleries bring to the UK and encourage greater and more diverse exhibitions.
