English Heritage will replace dropped ice creams free at 18 sites in August, after its own poll found most people would be too polite to ask.
English Heritage will replace ice creams dropped by visitors free of charge at 18 of its sites throughout August, in a summer promotion it has branded “Ice Cream Splat Insurance”.
Visitors who buy an ice cream in a cone or cup at the participating sites will be covered automatically by the promotion. It sees those who have dropped their ice cream able to return to the point of purchase, with the dropped cone or cup, to request a replacement. The offer runs through August.
The promotion follows a poll commissioned by English Heritage, which found that 68% of respondents said they would be too polite to go back and ask for a replacement, despite 70% saying ice cream was one of the highlights of their child or grandchild’s day.
According to the poll, younger people were more likely to ask for a replacement, with 27% of Gen Z and 22% of Millennials willing to do so, compared with 16% of Boomers.
Daisy Rowe, head of commercial development at English Heritage, said of the promotion: “We know how important days out are to our families for making special memories and don’t want anything to ruin that.”
The 18 sites serving Northern Bloc ice cream include Stonehenge, Osborne and Dover Castle.
The promotion coincides with English Heritage’s Great British Summer events, which include fairground games, puppet shows and sandcastle building, and the return of its jousting and knights’ tournaments.
