28 museums receive £25.5m from Museum Estate and Development Fund

Museums including Bristol Museums, Walmer Castle and People’s History Museum share infrastructure funding in latest MEND round.

Twenty-eight museums will receive £25.5m from the Museum Estate and Development Fund to undertake infrastructure works and improve visitor facilities, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has announced.

The allocation forms part of the £127.8m first tranche of the government’s Arts Everywhere Fund, which also includes £96m for 74 arts venues and £6.3m for 28 library services.

Bristol Museums received the largest museum allocation at £3.6m. e received £3.1m, Hartlepool Borough Council received £2.5m for museum infrastructure, and People’s History Museum received £2.5m.

Yorkshire Museum was awarded £2m, Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire received £1.6m for roof and drainage repairs, and Oakwell Hall in Kirklees received £1.6m. Bramall Hall in Stockport and London Transport Museum each received £1m.

Black Country Living Museum in Dudley was awarded £454,159 to safeguard historic buildings. Smaller allocations included Ryedale Folk Museum with £351k, Natural History Museum in Colchester with £499k, and Burton Constable Hall with £242k.

The Museum Estate and Development Fund has supported 150 museums over the past four years. The fund is administered by Arts Council England on behalf of DCMS.

The announcement follows the government’s commitment of up to £1.5bn to the cultural sector over the current parliament. Further details on the Museum Estate and Development Fund and the new Museum Transformation Programme will be announced in due course. The next round of MEND will open for applications in the coming months.
