The museum in London takes a £120,000 prize from the charity
Art Fund, the UK’s national charity for art, has announced Young V&A as the winner of its 2024 Museum of the Year award.
The museum in London, which opened a little over 12 months ago, takes a £120,000 prize.
A further £15,000 will be given to each of the four finalists Craven Museum in Skipton; Dundee Contemporary Arts; Manchester Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
The 2024 judging panel visited each of the finalists to inform their decision-making earlier this year.
Newly appointed Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, said: “Our world-leading museums are a source of creativity and curiosity that can inspire lifelong passions for learning, history and the arts.
“This year’s Art Fund Museum of the Year was a tough competition with an exciting shortlist representing institutions from across the country. Congratulations to the Young V&A on this achievement, recognising their hard work to create a unique space dedicated to young people.”
Young V&A opened on 1 July 2023 following a £13 million capital project to transform the former V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green.
It offers three active, innovative permanent galleries; Play, Imagine and Design.
The museum has welcomed over 590,000 people in the first nine months of opening – a 223% increase on the V&A Museum of Childhood’s figures for the same period in 2019/20.
