The ‘hop-on-hop-off’ minibus allows visitors to travel from one South Downs location to another while taking in the local sights.

A shuttle bus service has been launched in Sussex to connect Towner Eastbourne and both Charleston art venues, allowing visitors the chance to visit multiple art venues for one fee.

The Sussex Art Shuttle offers a ‘hop-on-hop-off’ minibus which will run on weekends, and also passes through the South Downs locations including the Seven Sisters cliffs, Cuckmere Valley and the villages of Alfriston and Litlington.

The project, which runs until November, is a pilot venture between Towner Eastbourne, Charleston and South Downs National Park and iis operated by Cuckmere Buses.

It is thought to be the first of its kind in the region, allowing visitors to see Turner Prize 2023 at Towner Eastbourne alongside other major attractions and exhibitions during the Sussex cultural season. Business-led tourism consortium, Sussex Modern, is promoting the initiative.

The service will set off four times a day between Friday and Sunday from Towner Eastbourne, reaching Charleston and Lewes in under an hour.

Nathaniel Hepburn, Director, Charleston, commented: “The Sussex Art Shuttle opens up new possibilities for visitors to experience the rich cultural landscape of our region and we are delighted to launch it in time for visitors to experience three of the biggest exhibitions in Sussex; Bring No Clothes: Bloomsbury and Fashion in Lewes, David Hockney at Charleston in Firle and of course the Turner Prize in Eastbourne.

“Visitors will now have a seamless way to experience these exhibitions and see the beautiful landscape in between.”
