Spectacular photos from Night of Heritage Light

Last night thousands flocked to nine UNESCO World Heritage sites across the UK to see lighting professionals take part in the Society of Light and Lighting’s Night of Heritage Light to celebrate the skills of its members and promote UNESCO’s International Year of Light 2015. Here are the stunning results

Adam Glatherine and David Battersby. Location: Fountains Abbey. "The particular way light will be used on the east façade is intended bring out even older historical aspects of the abbey and tie them together with the contemporary values of the International Year of Light (IYL) 2015." Jim Patton of Light and Design. Location: Giant's Causeway. Patton worked with the National Trust, which opened the visitor centre and cafe on the night as hundreds of visitors turned out to see the show. "This challenging site has no mains supply and the plan at present is to have a mix of battery powered LED fittings and some more powerful generator powered LED floods at remote locations." Michael Grubb of Michael Grubb Studio. Location: Durdle Door. "Our concept is to create a scene that is reminiscent of an impressionist painting by placing a person in a rowing boat under the iconic arch. We will then use a variety of lighting tricks, from a boat, to fill the arch with reflected light. Additional lighting from the shore will provide warmth to the landscape." Photograph by Mike Massaro
Andrew Bissell head of lighting design group Cundall Light4. Locations: Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City. "With so much to light in the area we really had to reign ourselves in. We settled on the idea of lighting the inside of one of the graving docks. We like the idea that the effect will not be seen until you arrive at or walk past the graving dock."
Malcolm Innes. Location: Edinburgh Old and New Town. "The site seemed like an easy choice as we are already working on a research project with Edinburgh World Heritage Trust to explore innovative new ways to use community co-design to re-light the Closes (narrow pedestrian vennels or alleyways) that lead of Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile." Simeon Kay of Designphase Ltd working with LITE Ltd. Location: Ironbridge Gorge. "With the support of LITE Ltd we plan to light the iron structure with a range of colour changeable LED products, providing a full width panoramic of the bridge." Photograph by Ian Robinson
Michael Curry. Location: Blenheim Palace. "We looked at lighting the main entrance as the focus of the scheme with the lighting receding back around the perimeter of the courtyard." Photograph by Matthew Hicks
Iain Ruxton and Colin Ball. Location: Tower of London. "We want to show the presence of what this Tower guards for our collective identity, and that right here is the shining heart of the nation." Photograph by Rachel Ferriman
