Sir Mark Jones confirmed as British Museum interim director

The former V&A director was put forward by the museum earlier this week and his appointment now has government approval

Sir Mark Jones’ appointment as Interim Director of the British Museum is to go ahead following approval by the Government.

Earlier this week the museum put forward Jones for the role. The appointment, which had the unanimous approval of the Board of Trustees, was put to the government for approval before being confirmed.

Chair of Trustees, George Osborne, said: “This is a critical moment for the British Museum, and I cannot think of anyone better placed to help take us forward than Sir Mark Jones. His experience, grip and deep knowledge are exactly what’s needed, and I very much look forward to working together.”

Sir Mark Jones said: “I am pleased and honoured to have been offered the opportunity to work with the board and with colleagues in the Museum to ensure the future security of the collections and restore the reputation of this great museum.”

Jones worked for the British Museum for 17 years in a curatorial role at the beginning of his career, and has previously served asDirector of National Museums Scotland and the V&A.

His appointment follows the resignation of Hartwig Fischer in the wake of reported thefts from the museum’s collection.
