Research to explore how young people engage with England’s museums

Arts Council England commissions GEM to investigate youth engagement in English museums through nationwide survey.

New research has been launched which will explore how children and young people are engaging with museums in England.

The research is being undertaken by the Group for Education in Museums (GEM), which has been commissioned to carry out the research by Arts Council England.

An online survey asks museums to explain the types of programmes they offer, the age and education ranges of their young audiences, and insight into both effective and challenging strategies for engaging with young people.

The survey is aimed at people delivering programmes and services in museums either as museum staff or as freelancers.

The research will run until the end of March 2025, and is hoped to provide greater understanding of how children and young people are engaging with museums in England.
