“Not in line with our values”: We The Curious latest to leave X

The Bristol visitor attraction said it had seen a rise in hate speech and a fall in audience engagement.

Bristol science and arts centre We The Curious has become the latest visitor attraction to call time on its use of X, formerly Twitter.

The organisation said as a “values-led charity organisation that puts pride in being progressive, collaborate, creative, playful and inquisitive, it’s important that the way that we behave[…] and the way that we communicate – are in line with those values.”

It cited what it called a “huge rise in misinformation and hate speech” on the platform, labelling it “not in line with our values, and where we stand, especially in terms of our commitment to being an inclusive, anti-racist organisation.”

It said since October 2022 it had observed a 70% decline in social media engagement on X, and its audiences “seem to be on the move, so we need to go with them”.

The Story Museum in Oxford has also stepped down from the platform, it announced in July that it would ‘take a break’ from Twitter, and has not posted since.

At the start of the year The Association of Cultural Enterprises announced it would no longer operate its profile on X citing among its reasons a “misalignment of values”.
