New site will feature collection of 150,000 photographs and oral histories, subculture library, slide archive, bar and cafe when doors open in October.
The Museum of Youth Culture is to open its first site in Camden later this year.
Described as the world’s first museum dedicated to youth culture, it will open its door in October 2025.
The Museum of Youth Culture was established a decade ago with no permanent location. It focused on documenting youth culture’s role in British society
The museum maintains a collection of 150,000 photographs, objects, and oral histories related to young people’s experiences. It collects materials through public contributions and aims to document diverse experiences of growing up in Britain. The museum’s stated goals include preserving youth culture history and examining intergenerational perspectives on youth experiences.
The new location, which has not yet been disclosed, will host screening, talks and events, will feature a ‘Subculture library’, slide archive, bar, and cafe.
It said: “In acknowledging the history of teenagers as its own area of social history, we advocate for youth voice and the rights of young people in the now. Young people have always defied boundaries and broken the mould, and as an organisation we support future generations to keep up this momentum and do the same.”
Ahead of its opening, the museum has launched a memberships programme, providing access to exclusive merchandise and members-only events such as archive tours.
Tiers range from a £10 ‘Mates Rates’ option to a £1500 ‘Total Ledges” tier, which offers premium membership, exclusive merchandise, priority event access, behind-the-scenes experiences, and special privileges including archive visits, founder dinners, and limited edition collectibles.
