Museum of Youth Culture opens with rave flyers and teenage truths

Three exhibitions include Youth Collective-curated show on teenage experiences, and Camden club culture 1988-2000 using Phatmedia archive.

The Museum of Youth Culture has revealed new details about its first exhibitions ahead of its opening this weekend.

The Camden museum has announced ‘Subculture Street Party, which it describes as a “joyful introduction to the Museum of Youth Culture’s collections, spanning photographs, public submissions, clothing, objects and video.”

Also announced is ‘Things I Lied To My Parents About: Mapping Youth Through Truth and Deception’. Curated by the Museum’s Youth Collective, the exhibition explores the stories and formative moments that come with “lying as a teenager, from sneaking off to parties to first dates and adventures with friends.”

Its third exhibition ‘Dancing Down The High Street: Club Culture in Camden 1988–2000’ draws on the Phatmedia archive, an online database of ‘old skool’ rave flyers. The museum described the exhibition as a portrait of Camden’s nightlife “through photographs and flyers from a defining era of club culture.”

The museum’s opening will be ticketed, with both free and paid tiers on offer which include a donation to the museum.

The museum’s opening comes after its initial 2025 plans were pushed back by a leak in the basement floor venue.

The newly announced exhibitions will run alongside the museum’s monthly online exhibition. It plans to submit an open call for contributions to each month’s changing theme. This month’s theme, ‘Strike a Pose’ focuses on photobooth photographs in the form of passport photos and club night strips.
