Museum Moves 23 – 29 September 2022

Our weekly feature rounds up the latest updates in museum appointments, openings, funding and new exhibits from across the UK.

Openings

Eureka! Science + Discovery has announced it will open on Friday, 11th November 2022. The Merseyside location has been created by Eureka!, best known for the national children’s museum in Halifax, and will champion art and STEM subjects for young people.

Exhibitions

As a response to the cost-of-living crisis, the National Gallery is to introduce its first Pay What You Wish scheme. Its retrospective,’ Lucian Freud: New Perspectives’ is being staged by the National Gallery to mark the centenary of the birth of the major 20th-century artist and will include more than 65 loans from museums and major private collections. On Friday evenings throughout the run of the exhibition visitors will be able to pay what they like, from £1 upward.

A major exhibition of rarely seen artworks from Scotland’s national collection is to go on display at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern One). The gallery said ‘Conversations with the Collection’ “presents artworks in unexpected arrangements; for example, a gouache made by the Indian artist Jamini Roy in 1930s Kolkata will be placed alongside a lithograph by Edvard Munch printed in 1890s Berlin and a pastel drawing made by Carole Gibbons in 1960s Glasgow, to encourage discussion about shared affinities between artists from different time periods and geographical locations”. From 28 September 2022 – 2025.

Untold stories from UK’s sporting history, hidden memorabilia and forgotten collections will be celebrated this Friday, 30th September when sports clubs, museums, community groups and individuals showcase an amazing variety of sporting memories, objects, photographs, audio and film in support of National Sporting Heritage Day. Among the events is the ‘Doug and the Don’ exhibition at the CC4 Museum of Welsh Cricket, with never before released audio, sketches and other items shared between sporting icon Don Bradman and Welsh club cricketer Douglas Davies.

Later this year, St Albans Museum + Gallery will present ‘Henry Moore: Drawing in the Dark’, the largest collection of Henry Moore’s coalmining drawings ever exhibited. Consisting of over 100 drawings, the work of the British Modernist will be showcased alongside sculptures and other works-on-paper. Runs 16 December 2022 -16 April 2023.

The Hold, located within Suffolk Archives, has announced its Autumn exhibition. Picture Books For All, opens on Friday 21 October, and explores the history of Ipswich-based printers W.S. Cowell Ltd. It will explore where Cowell sits in the history of modernism in Britain and examines their significant contribution to literature and society through design.

A project by Historic England will see a year-long call out to create an ‘unofficial photographic archive of the English high street’ which will result in a national outdoor exhibition. Fifty of the best photographs from the call-out will be displayed in an England-wide outdoor exhibition next Spring.

A new exhibition and project lab – History Makers: A celebration of Derbyshire women and gender diversity – opens this week at Derby Museum and Art Gallery. Content for the exhibition has been developed from feedback from visitors, volunteers and community members about the lack of representation for both women and gender diversity within the museums’ galleries. The exhibition recognises the contribution and cultural expression of Derbyshire history makers throughout the ages, with an emphasis on the inspirational stories of those often overlooked or misrepresented in our shared history. Runs until February 2023.

Next month the Wellcome Collection will present ‘In Plain Sight’, a free exhibition exploring “the different ways we see and are seen”. A total of 140 objects and artworks will invite visitors to encounter different experiences of sighted, partially sighted and blind people to consider the subjectivities of vision and blindness. 20 October 2022 – 12 February 2023.

UK museums are gearing up for Black History Month this October, as they reveal their plans for exhibitions and events in celebration of African and Caribbean culture, arts and history. Venues include the Walker Art Gallery, Museum of Liverpool, Bank of England Museum, and the Horniman.

Funding

Bath & North East Somerset Council has secured £2.m to support the regeneration of the Milsom Quarter, which will include appointing designers to develop the Fashion Museum. The museum will leave its current home at Assembly Rooms on 30 October 2022. The Milsom St. Core (comprising Milsom Street and New Bond Street in Bath city centre) will provide a home to an enhanced Fashion Museum when it re-opens.
