Exhibitions and displays
- Tate Modern has this week unveiled a new work by artist Anicka Yi as the Hyundai Commission returns to the gallery. The installation is Yi’s largest to date, transforming the Turbine Hall at the heart of Tate Modern. The work is produced by Petra Schmidt, Production Manager.
- V&A’s Fashioning Masculinities will present around 100 looks and 100 artworks, displayed thematically across three galleries, celebrating the power, artistry and diversity of masculine attire and appearance. Opening March 2022.
- Liverpool’s World Museum is set to open a Doctor Who themed exhibit next year, in which visitors will be able to see original props and sets and interactive exhibits. —
- The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon has announced a new exhibition showcasing the work of ex-Shapland and Petter woodworking employees, featuring wood-turning and model making.’Busy Hands – What the Shappie boys did next’ will examine how the skills are used today. 16 October 2021 – 18 February 2022.
- The Science Museum Group, with support from partners including Cancer Research UK and Pfizer, is opening a free exhibition exploring the revolution in science that is transforming cancer care. It will open at the Science and Industry Museum before moving to London’s Science Museum in Summer 2022. 22 October 2021 – March 2022.
- The Imperial War Museum’s combined Second World War and The Holocaust Galleries is to open this month, a £30.7mm project six years in the making. Opening 20th October.
- Amgueddfa Cymru (National Museum Wales) has announced two new artist commissions which will reframe the legacy of a Welsh officer of the British Army who fought in the Napoleonic Wars, Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Picton.
- White Rose University Consortium is to fund the Railways and Slavery Research Project, developed by curators from the National Railway Museum, the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester and Leeds Industrial Museum, which will explore the links between railways and the global slave trade.
Funding and acquisitions
- A 1,800-year-old Roman hoard, which includes a bust of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, has been acquired by the Yorkshire Museum.
Events
- A new festival is to celebrate the campaigning legacy of RSPB founder Emily Williamson. Taking place at Manchester Art Gallery, it will explore the links between conservation, campaigning, science and art. 12 – 14 November 2021.
- The British Motor Museum has teamed up with the University of Warwick to host an Esports Centre, giving visitors to the opportunity to have a go on one of the 24 driving simulation stations. 23 – 28 October 2021.
- To mark its 100th anniversary celebrations, The West Highland Museum in Fort William has launched a campaign to secure a set of portraits of key members of the Stuart line.
- National Museums Liverpool (NML) is looking for 16–24-year-olds across the Liverpool City Region to join a Youth Engagement Forum which will develop a programme of events and activities by young people, for young people across its seven museums and galleries.
Awards
- Bailiffgate Museum & Gallery in Alnwick has been named winner of the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award 2021, fending off competition from 19 shortlisted UK museums.
- Manchester Jewish Museum, along with architects Citizens Design Bureau and structural engineers Buro Happold, has won two awards at the annual Building Constriction Industry Awards at a ceremony on Wednesday 13 October.
- The Horniman Museum and Gardens has won two London in Bloom awards, a Gold in the Heritage Parks and Gardens category and a Gold and Category Winner in the new Environment Challenge Award.
International news
- Our House, a new museum dedicated to electronic music, is to open in Amsterdam featuring six exhibitions and 15 installations, with contributions from well-known DJs including Armin van Buuren and Carl Cox. Friday 29th October.
