From our Readers

“I know the difference that even a short, considered response can make”

Our new ‘From our Readers’ feature shares letters sent to Advisor

Beyeux tapestry

Last week, Advisor covered a petition urging French President Emmanuel Macron to reverse the planned loan of The Bayeux tapestry, which garnered nearly 60,000 signatures.

The Bayeux tapestry is set for display at the British Museum next year as part of a loan swap between France and the UK, first announced in July.

Among responses from our readers was:

“Having seen the tapestry in Bayeux I know it is a beautiful thing. I also am aware of how fragile it must be. Please keep it safe in France. If people cannot see the original in situ I would heartily recommend a visit to Reading Museum in England who have a marvellous Victorian copy displayed in a very similar way.”

Membership loophole

Last week, Advisor also covered news of a reportedly leaked letter from sector leaders to the government, urging caution over upcoming consumer rights law which could allow memberships to be refunded after two weeks.

One reader responded:

“I totally agree with the concerns raised about this membership loophole and believe that it will create a dangerous precedent for the heritage industry which is already having enough financial worries.”

Encouraging constructive sector feedback

‘From our Readers’ also welcomes letters hoping to begin a conversation on topics affecting the sector. This week a letter encouraged the sector to consider the ‘missed opportunity’ of constructive feedback. If you’d like to add to this conversation, use the form below.

“One theme I hear raised time and again in conversations across our sector is the importance of constructive feedback and the noticeable gaps where it is missing.

We are very good at encouraging visitors to share their thoughts on our venues and experiences. When it comes to our own professional relationships with suppliers, consultants, or job applicants, feedback often falls by the wayside. That is a missed opportunity. Thoughtful feedback, whether positive or developmental, not only supports individual growth but also helps organisations and partners evolve in ways that benefit the whole sector.

Technology suppliers often tell me how hard it is to get meaningful reflections from the venues they work with or have been through a sales process with. I have also experienced this first-hand in my own role as a technology supplier.

Having sat on all sides of both of these scenarios, I know the difference that even a short, considered response can make. It builds trust, strengthens relationships, and ultimately drives improvement.

Making space for feedback does not need to be onerous. Sometimes just a few lines of honesty can be transformative. If we can embed this practice into the way we collaborate and do business, we can create a culture where learning and development are shared responsibilities, and where the sector as a whole continues to grow stronger.”

From Our Readers

'From Our Readers' is a space for you to have your say. Letters can be published under your name or anonymously, if you prefer. We want to hear your unfiltered thoughts on the issues shaping the sector — whether that means venting frustrations about funding and bureaucracy, highlighting examples of poor practice, or questioning the direction of travel. It’s also a place to share the wins, big or small, that deserve recognition. Whatever’s on your mind, we encourage you to speak openly and honestly. Selected letters will be published online, with some also highlighted in our newsletters.
