Hull Maritime Museum counts 50,000 visitors in first month back

Museum reaches quarter of annual target within first month of reopening after six-year closure.

Hull Maritime Museum has counted more than 50,000 visitors just one month after its £20.4m redevelopment reopened to the public.

The museum said it has already reached a quarter of its annual visitor target thanks to its early popularity.

Prior to its redevelopment, the Maritime Museum attracted more than 200,000 in 2017. It now hopes to reach 192,000 in 2026.

The museum closed in 2020 for its redevelopment and was reopened on 8 August 2026 with 28 new galleries, restored spaces and exhibitions celebrating Hull’s maritime story.

Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “To welcome more than 50,000 visitors in the museum’s first month is a fantastic achievement and demonstrates just how important Hull Maritime Museum is to our city and its communities.”

Hull Maritime, including the redevelopment of Hull Maritime Museum, is a UK City of Culture legacy project jointly funded by Hull City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Eilish McGuinness, chief executive at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “The museum is a major contributor to the city’s ongoing, heritage-led, cultural renaissance and is already proving to be a successful gateway to all of the wonderful things that Hull has to offer.”
