The museum and glasshouse – which closed in March 2020 due to pandemic – is to fully reopen for seven days a week, reports parent charity Glasgow Life.
The reopening date of The People’s Palace in Glasgow has been announced by its parent charity Glasgow Life.
The museum and glasshouse will reopen at 10am on Wednesday 23 February 2022 for seven days a week for the first time since the pandemic began.
In March 2020 the museum was forced to close by the pandemic, but partially reopened in June 2021 for two days a week.
In September 2021, essential repairs to damaged plasterwork on the top floor of the museum forced the museum to once again temporarily close its building.
While remedial works were undertaken to repair a section of damaged plasterwork last year, the collections on the top floor were removed for safekeeping.
Some of its items are currently being cleaned and made secure for display once again by the expert conservation staff at Glasgow Museums Resource Centre.
Glasgow Life reports the items will be re-instated to The People’s Palace “as soon as possible” but the top floor of the museum will remain closed while the conservation work is concluded. The café and shop will also remain closed during this time.
Glasgow Life said the historic building which houses The People’s Palace will require further ”substantial capital works in the future.”
Councillor David McDonald, Chair of Glasgow Life and Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council said of the reopening: “I look forward to this important venue reopening next week, and once again entertaining and informing Glaswegians and visitors to the city alike.”
