Museum expands leadership with fresh trustees, aiming to amplify women’s untold stories from East London’s rich heritage.

The East End Women’s Museum is building out its board of trustees, announcing three new appointments.

The appointments include a new chair of trustees, Catherine Owen, Head of Marketing and Events at The British Academy.

Owen said of the appointment: “As an East End resident, I want to help preserve and share the voices of working-class and diverse women, making our histories accessible, visible, and celebrated.”

Owen said a career in communications and events across heritage, higher education and cultural spaces would be brought to the role.

Also newly appointed is communications trustee Freya Barry, Media Manager at the British Library.

Barry said: “My background working in PR for the heritage sector will enable me to provide insight into how we can share the untold stories of women from East London and engage with audiences who are often under-represented in the sector.”

General trustee, Laura Sainsbury, who is Head of Public Policy, Commercial and Institutional Banking at NatWest Group makes the final confirmed appointment.

Sainsbury said: ‘As the East End Women’s Museum approaches its tenth year it’s an exciting time to be joining. I’m looking forward to bringing my experience in strategic communications to support the museum in engaging in its local, regional and national community and really making an impact in representing and bringing new voices to the table.’

The museum is now looking to recruit for four other trustee positions, including a treasurer and trustees with expertise in legal, HR, and fundraising to help support the museum as it looks ahead to a busy year, in the run-up to its 10th anniversary in 2026.
