British Council opens up applications for International Museum Academy 2016

The International Museum Academy’s aim is to provide emerging museum and gallery leaders from around the world with the knowledge and skills necessary to increase the growth and sustainability of galleries and museums in their countries

The British Council’s has teamed up with four museums and galleries to bring International Museum Academy 2016 and they are Tyne & Wear Archived & Museums, National Museums Liverpool, Culture 24 and Royal Pavilion, Brighton and Museums and Whitechapel Gallery, London.

The council said the academy is a response to the many ongoing changes Museums and galleries around the world where there is an unprecedented growth and rapid change. “These changes increase the need to train a new generation of museum leaders,” it said “In response to this need, the British Council is working with some of the UK’s leading museums, galleries and arts organisations to launch the International Museum Academy.”

The mission of the International Museum Academy is to provide emerging museum and gallery leaders from around the world with the knowledge and skills necessary to increase the growth and sustainability of galleries and museums in their countries. The alumni of the International Museum Academy join an international network of museum and gallery leaders who together demonstrate the value and need for cultural engagement among all segments of society.

“Our mission is to be the world’s leading example of an inclusive museum service and we are delighted that the British Council is recognising the importance of our work, by hosting part of its International Museum Academy with us. We look forward to sharing our experiences and skills, and to growing international dialogue both in the UK and overseas,” said Dr David Fleming OBE, Director at National Museums Liverpool and current President of the UK Museums Association.

The programme will offer participants exclusive access to world class collections, network with museum and gallery directors and develop strategic plans for their institutions. Courses will provide an innovative mix of seminars with leading UK museum professionals, creative workshops, hands on sessions and ‘behind the scenes’ tours.
