Architect Alex Ely appointed chair of the Museum of the Home

Alex Ely, founder director of architecture and urban design studio Mæ, takes up the role at the London museum

The Secretary of State has appointed Alex Ely as Chair of the Museum of the Home for a term of four years, commencing on 23 March 2025.

The announcement was made by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Museum of the Home, and The Rt Hon Lisa Nandy MP, and published today, 28 April 2025.

Alex Ely is the founder director of Mæ, an architecture and urban design studio based in London. A RIBA Chartered Architect and a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, Ely graduated from the Royal College of Art.

Under Ely’s leadership, Mæ has gained recognition for its design approach, delivering projects across masterplanning, housing, healthcare, and cultural buildings. Ely oversees Mæ’s design direction and won the RIBA Stirling Prize 2023.

Ely has advised the Government and the Mayor of London on urban and planning policy, taught at UK Schools of Architecture, written several books, and exhibited internationally.

Alex Ely said: “I am delighted to be appointed by the Secretary of State as Chair of the Museum of the Home. The Museum plays a crucial role in the advancement of education and promoting debate about the importance of home in and for societies.
