£1.3m ‘Sunday School’ project begins at London’s Union Chapel

Repairs are to be carried out at its Grade II* listed Sunday School building ahead of a new programme of community events

Works have begun on Union Chapel in London, the charity and church which is aiming to open its Sunday School space up to the public next September.

The project sees repairs being made to the Grade II* listed Sunday School building, which has fallen into disrepair.

A £1.3m grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and further £150K from City Bridge Foundation will be used to complete external and internal repairs such including new roof and retrofitting works.

Union Chapel began its life as a London music venue in 1992 and has since hosted performances from major musicians, alongside serving as a community space and a place of worship.

The Sunday School building holds a collection of records, books, artefacts and memorabilia from the last 200 years, and sits alongside the well-known Grade I listed Gothic Revival chapel.

The project is hoped to result in a new community space for workshops, events, activities, meetings, and an “up close and personal music and arts programme”.
