London museum seeks community funding to showcase LGBTQ+ artefacts and stories.
Queer Britain Museum has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise £20,000 for new exhibition displays scheduled to open in 2026.
The campaign aims to fund six themed displays that will showcase the museum’s growing collection of artefacts documenting LGBTQ+ life in the UK.
To date, the museum has raised more than £2,500 from 113 donors.
Funding will also come from the Clothworkers Foundation, which has provided an initial grant of £10,000 towards the £30,000 total required for the project.
The museum, which receives no core funding, is seeking the remaining amount through community donations, which it has paired with a prize draw featuring contributions from arts organisations and LGBTQ+ businesses.
The planned exhibition will feature rotating displays organised around six themes: Resist!, exploring activist movements; Club Kids, examining LGBTQ+ social spaces; Queer Creativity, showcasing artists across various media; Body and Mind, addressing health and disability experiences; Live, Laugh, Love, presenting everyday domestic stories; and The World Around Us, examining LGBTQ+ contributions to British society.
The museum has identified a need for display cases, hardware and gallery infrastructure to present its collection. The fundraising campaign includes a prize draw with donations starting at £2, offering rewards including tickets to BFI Flare’s 40th edition, VIP passes to Mighty Hoopla 2026, rare 1990s OutRage! protest art prints, and a private guided tour of the new exhibition.
The crowdfunding campaign closes at 9am on Tuesday 14th October. The museum plans to use the themed display format to allow for changing narratives whilst maintaining consistent thematic structures.
