Chris Bryant appoints ahigh-profile figures to strengthen leadership of national museums

Culture Minister Chris Bryant has announced the appointment of 16 new trustees for the British Museum, the Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The appointments include several well-known public figures, such as TV broadcaster Claudia Winkleman, acclaimed artist Sir Isaac Julien CBE, historian Tom Holland, media personality Vick Hope (Victoria Nwosu-Hope), and businesswoman Akshata Murty, wife of former PM Rish Sunak.

The appointments follow Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy’s July 2024 initiative to attract a wider pool of talent to the public appointments system, aiming to bring in leaders, innovators and changemakers from across the country.

Bryant emphasised the importance of these roles, stating: “Public appointees help to lead some of the UK’s best known institutions, and these immensely talented individuals with a wide range of personal and professional experience will make great contributions to how they are run and help to promote British soft power abroad.”

He added: “These roles are an important part of our cultural infrastructure and I’m delighted that we have 16 new trustees for the V&A, Tate and British Museum.”

The British Museum’s new trustees include Lord Daniel Finkelstein OBE, Tom Holland, Dr Tiffany Jenkins, Martha Kearney and Claudia Winkleman.

The Tate welcomes Nick Clarry, Sir Isaac Julien CBE, Jack Kirkland, Tim Richards CBE and June Sarpong OBE.

The Victoria and Albert Museum’s new trustees are Mariella Frostrup, Andrew Keith, Akshata Murty, Nigel Newton CBE, Victoria Nwosu-Hope and Pedro Pina.

Trustees are appointed by the Prime Minister and provide strategic leadership and advice to help these national institutions deliver on their objectives and better represent the people they serve.
