Heritage Development Manager – Nantgarw China Works and Museum

Can you help us deliver our vision for the future?
The Nantgarw China Works Trust has ambitious plans for the next decade. After growing the business over the past few years, we now wish to make a step-change in how we care for and interpret the site and enhance its viability. Reporting to the Chairman and Trustees, the appointed candidate will play a leading role in turning that aspiration into reality at this volunteer-staffed site.

Nantgarw China Works is where the world’s finest porcelain was made 200 years ago. Today it is an independent museum telling the history of ceramic production at the site, a working pottery where the lost recipe for making the historic porcelain has been successfully recreated, and an educational institution offering some 500 workshop sessions every year. The remains of the historic works are the best preserved in Wales and of UK importance.

Although the initial appointment is for 18 months, we hope that the appointee can be considered for a permanent position. For further details see attached Job description or go to

We would consider approaches from applicants who might wish to propose different working or remuneration arrangements.

Closing date: 31 October 2024

JOB DESCRIPTION

Role: Heritage Development Manager, Nantgarw China Works and Museum
35 hours per week with 20 days’ holiday plus bank holidays; hybrid working could be possible
Salary £30,000

About Us
Nantgarw China Works is celebrated as the birthplace of ‘the world’s finest porcelain’. It is a unique surviving example of an early British porcelain factory. The remains of the historic works are the best preserved in Wales and the remaining kilns and outbuildings are protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Nantgarw house, a Grade II Listed Building, functions as the site’s Museum and was home (two centuries ago) to some of the most remarkable and influential porcelain painters and manufacturers in the world.

Today, the China Works is an independent museum, as well as a working pottery and an educational institution offering some 500 workshop sessions every year.

The site is owned by the local authority, Rhondda Cynon Taf CBC. Since 2013, the Nantgarw China Works Trust has taken on the lease and responsibility for managing, maintaining, conserving and developing the site. We receive no core funding and are totally dependent on earned income, donations and grants to fund our activities. We rely upon a team of dedicated volunteers to keep the museum open throughout the year.

Our mission is to transform where the world’s finest porcelain was made into a vibrant centre for ceramic history and contemporary innovation.

We are now looking for a passionate and dynamic Heritage Development Manager to ensure the ongoing sustainability, growth, and success of this historic site, so join us at Nantgarw China Works and Museum and help preserve this important Welsh heritage site for future generations!
